7 benefits of installing a sensory room

At SpaceKraft, we’ve been designing, manufacturing, and installing Sensory Rooms for over 30 years. Our experience has shown us how powerful they can be in supporting people of all ages and abilities.

Sensory rooms are carefully designed spaces that offer controlled sensory experiences through light, sound, texture, and movement. The concept was originally developed for therapeutic settings, but they are now increasingly used in schools, early years settings, and community spaces.

These rooms offer particular benefits for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and mental health challenges, thanks to their ability to support emotional regulation, focus, and wellbeing. Whether used for calming, stimulation, or skill-building, a sensory room can be a powerful and valuable addition to any inclusive setting.

Here are seven key benefits of installing one.

1. Supports Emotional Regulation

Children with sensory processing difficulties often struggle to manage strong emotions, particularly when they are overstimulated or anxious. A sensory room provides a low-stimulation, predictable space that allows them to calm down, reset, and regain a sense of control. Over time as this space becomes familiar, its impact can increase.

For children with autism or mental health needs, having a dedicated environment to retreat to with a routine attached to it can reduce anxiety and prevent emotional escalation, making the broader environment feel more manageable.

2. Enhances Focus and Learning Readiness

Sensory rooms can help children prepare for and return to learning with improved focus and attention. For students with ADHD who may benefit from regular movement or tactile input, these spaces can provide just the right level of stimulation to help them get back to feeling centred and ready to engage.

Short, structured breaks in a sensory room can support transitions between tasks, reduce restlessness, and minimise classroom disruption.

3. Encourages Independence and Self-Soothing

When used consistently, sensory rooms begin to help children understand what helps them feel calm, alert, or focused. Over time, this can help them begin to recognise their own needs and choose strategies that work best for them.

This promotes independence and emotional literacy, helping children develop self-soothing skills that will serve them beyond educational or therapeutic environments.

4. Reduces Behavioural Incidents

Many behavioural outbursts stem from overwhelm associated with unmet sensory needs. A child who appears defiant or distressed may simply be overwhelmed by noise, bright lights, or physical contact.

By proactively using a sensory room, staff can offer students a way to decompress before a situation escalates. This not only supports the individual child but also creates a calmer, more inclusive atmosphere.

5. Supports Mental Health and Wellbeing

It’s understandable that children experiencing anxiety, low mood, or trauma may struggle to regulate their internal state. A sensory room can act as a protective space where they feel safe, comforted, and in control - especially useful if they are not able to fully regulate their emotions.

Soothing lighting, gentle movement, and soft textures can reduce feelings of panic or overwhelm, while predictable routines and positive sensory input build trust and emotional resilience.

6. Creates an Inclusive and Supportive Environment

Installing a sensory room signals a commitment to inclusivity and whole-child support. It shows that your setting understands and values neurodiversity, and is proactive in providing for a wide range of needs.

Families, carers, and professionals often view sensory rooms as a sign of high-quality provision, especially in special schools, SEND units, and therapeutic settings. They can also be a welcome resource for Ofsted inspectors when demonstrating how behaviour and wellbeing are supported.

7. Provides a Versatile Resource

Sensory rooms are not one-size-fits-all. These spaces can be used to meet varied goals, whether calming a distressed pupil, working on sensory integration during an OT session, or supporting motor planning with interactive equipment.

Staff and therapists can adapt the space to support students across a range of ages, diagnoses, and learning needs, making it a long-term asset with multiple applications.

Real-World Impact: How Sensory Rooms Are Making a Difference

he benefits of sensory rooms aren’t just theoretical. Here’s an example of how we’ve helped to create a room with an everyday impact at The Pioneer School in Basildon. Serving pupils aged 3 to 25 with severe and complex needs, including SLD, PMLD and ASD, the school partnered with SpaceKraft to create a suite of sensory environments in their new purpose-built building.

The main space, a dual-purpose sensory room, combines tactile stimulation with calming, low-stimulation areas. The room features three bubble tubes, a fibre-optic curtain, and was installed before the school opened to ensure a smooth transition. According to sensory teacher Helen Carpenter, "It's all working out really well and the kids really love it in there."

The space is not only popular with pupils, it’s shaping a more relaxed, stimulating, and inclusive school culture. The Pioneer School is already planning to expand their sensory provision further based on the benefits they’ve seen so far.
